“Epitome of Sporting Perfection”: Twitter explodes as Australia win Women’s World Cup 2022

Australia and England played in the finals of the Women’s World Cup 2022 at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch. The match was a very high-scoring affair. 641 runs were scored in the match which is the second-highest in a match in the history of Women’s ODI cricket.

England won the toss and decided to field first. The Australians looked positive from the very beginning as Alyssa Healy and Rachael Haynes gave them a brilliant start. They put up a 160 runs partnership for the opening stand in 29 overs. Haynes was dismissed for 68 from 93 deliveries by Sophie Ecclestone. Beth Mooney joined Healy at this stage and they stitched another huge partnership for the team. After a 156 runs partnership between the duo, Healy was dismissed by Anya Shrubsole. But before going back to the pavilion Healy had already scored 170 runs off 138 deliveries. It was a classy act by Healy which took her team a massive total of 356 runs in their 50 overs. Beth Mooney played an important knock of 62 runs off 47 deliveries. Anya Shrubsole was the pick of the bowlers from the English team with 3 wickets for 46 runs from her quota of 10 overs.

England was under pressure of a huge score and that too in the finals of a World Cup. The pressure was evident on the English players as they made a very weak start to the chase. England was 2 down for 38 in the seventh over, when Natalie Sciver walked out to bat. Though wickets kept falling at the opposite end Sciver looked focused and intent on taking her team to victory. She kept running out of partners, and it was only Charolette Dean who stood up and stitched a 65 runs partnership with Sciver for the 9^th wicket. After Dean was dismissed, the last batter of the team Anya Shrubsole did not put up much resistance. As Meg Lanning caught Anya Shrubsole at mid-off of the bowling of Jess Jonassen, Australia ensured their 7^th World Cup title. Natalie Sciver scored an excellent 148 runs off 121 deliveries but ended up on the losing side. The pick of the bowlers for Australia was Alana King who picked up 3 wickets for 64 runs from her 10 overs. Jess Jonassen also had 3 wickets to her name.
