Gujarat and Mumbai locked horns in the 51st game of the Indian T20 League 2022 at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. The table toppers, Gujarat won the toss and decided to field first. However, their bowlers had a poor start as Mumbai openers, skipper Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan stitched a partnership of 73 runs in 7.3 overs.

Sharma (43) was the first wicket to fall as he was trying to reverse sweep against Rashid Khan but was hit on the pads. Three overs later, in-form Suryakuamar Yadav was caught at deep midwicket by Khan off Pradeep Sangwan after scoring just 13 runs. In the next over, Khan took the his second catch in the form of Kishan (45). After the dismissal, the scoring rate dropped as the team could only get to 119 in 14.5 from 111 in 12 overs.

At this stage, Kieron Pollard’s (four off 14 balls) struggle was ended by Khan, who clean him up with a peach of a delivery. Thanks to Tim David’s unbeaten 44 off 21, the five-time winners reached a respectable total of 177/6. For the Indian T20 League debutants, Khan took two wickets while Alzarri Joseph, Lockie Ferguson, and Sangwan took one each. In reply, the Hardik Pandya-led side had a great start to their chase.

Openers, Wriddhiman Saha and Shubman Gill stitched a partnership of 106 runs in 12.1 overs and made the mockery of the opposition bowlers. Gill (52) was the first wicket to fall as he was caught at long-on by Pollard of Murugan Ashwin. In the same over, Saha (55) followed as he was caught at deep square leg by Daniel Sams. Three overs later, Sai Sudharsan (14) was going well but got hit-wicket facing Pollard in the 16th over.

Skipper Pandya, who was trying to take the team close with 24 off 14 was run out by Kishan. The likes of David Miller and Rahul Tewatia (3)  took the team close before the latter got run out when the team needed seven runs off three balls. The team lost the game by five runs.
