Pat Cummins, Steve Smith in line to succeed Tim Paine as Australia skipper
Australia fast bowler Pat Cummins and batter Steve Smith are the likely candidates to take over the reins of Australia Test team ahead of the Ashes, set to begin on December 8. Wicketkeeper-batter Tim Paine stood down from the Test captaincy after his creepy Texts to a female co-worker went viral.
With the first Ashes Test due to begin in 19 days at Gabba in Brisbane, Cricket Australia (CA) have intensified the process of finding the next Test captain for the high-profile series. Cummins is the incumbent vice-captain of the Test team. If the CA appoints him as the leader, he will become the 47th player to lead his country in the red-ball format.
Cummins will also be the first pacer in 65 years to captain Australia. Ever since his comeback to the team in 2017, the 28-year-old has shattered several records. His accuracy, speed, control, and handy batting abilities make him a complete package.
On the other hand, Smith comes with a plethora of experience under his belt when it comes to leadership. He was the leader of the team before the sandpaper controversy back in 2018. Considering the current scenario and controversy which erupted following Paine’s exit, Australia might consider Smith for the leadership role.
Other candidates like Travis Head, Marnus Labuschagne are also in line to become the next Test captain.
