List of Orange Cap winners in Indian T20 League
The Indian T20 League (ITL) is a platform that gives ample opportunities to young Indian and overseas talents. Players who do well get picked in their national side while the established cricketers show their superstardom. The league rewards the highest run-getter in the tournament with the Orange Cap. A lot of international stars and uncapped players have won the award. Here is the list of all the Orange Cap winners.
Orange Cap winners over the years
Shaun Marsh (2008)
He is the first Orange Cap winner in the history of the ITL. The left-hander played for Punjab. The West Australian played 11 games in the tournament and amassed 616 runs averaging 68.44 including one hundred and five fifties at a strike rate of 139.68.
Matthew Hayden (2009)
Hayden had retired from international cricket a few months ahead of the second season in South Africa. Yet, he scored 572 runs in 12 games, averaging 52 with five fifties at a strike rate of 144.81 for Chennai.
Sachin Tendulkar (2010)
This was the first time an Indian had won the Orange Cap. He was leading the Mumbai side and the team qualified for the final. The master blaster played 15 games and accumulated 618 runs, averaging 47.53 with five fifties at a strike rate of 132.61.
Chris Gayle (2011)
Came as a replacement player to Dirk Nannes, he scored 608 runs in 12 games, averaging 67.55 with two hundred and three fifties at a strike rate of 183.13 for Bangalore.
Chris Gayle (2012)
He broke a few records this year. Became the first player to win back-to-back Orange Cap. He also became the first player to score in excess of 700 runs in an ITL season. The left-hander amassed 733 runs, averaging 61.08 at a strike rate of 160.74 with one hundred and seven fifties.
Michael Hussey (2013)
Playing for Chennai, he equalled Chris Gayle’s record of 733 runs, averaging 52.35 at a strike rate of 129.5 with six fifties. He had retired from international cricket ahead of the IPL.
Robin Uthappa (2014)
Having asked to open the innings for Kolkata alongside skipper Gautam Gambhir in the middle of the tournament, he managed to win the Orange Cap, amassing 660 runs, averaging 44 at a strike rate of 137.78 with five fifties. On top of that, he became the first player to win Orange Cap and ITL title in the same season.
David Warner (2015)
After being appointed captain of Hyderabad, he played 14 games and scored 562 runs, averaging 43.23 at a strike rate of 156.54 with seven fifties.
Virat Kohli (2016)
After Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli was the second Indian to win an Orange Cap in the ITL. Fans witnessed a master class from the modern-day chase master. He amassed a record-breaking 973 runs, averaging 81.06 and at a strike rate of 152.03 with four hundreds and seven fifties for Bangalore.
David Warner (2017)
The Australia opening batter once again won the Orange Cap while playing for Hyderabad. He amassed 641 runs, averaging 58.27 and a strike rate of 141.81 with one hundred and four fifties.
Kane Williamson (2018)
Having been appointed as captain after a one-year ban to David Warner, the Kiwi skipper amassed 735 runs in 17 games, averaging 52.5 at a strike rate of 142.44 with eight fifties.
David Warner (2019)
He became the first player to win the Orange Cap three times after scoring 692 runs in 12 games at an average of 69.2 and a strike rate of 143.87 with one hundred and eight fifties in 2019.
KL Rahul (2020)
Leading Punjab, he amassed 670 runs in 14 games, averaging 55.83 at a strike rate of 129.34, with one hundred and five fifties.
Ruturaj Gaikwad (2021)
Opening the batting for Chennai, he amassed 635 runs in 16 games, averaging 45.35 at a strike rate of 136.26 with one hundred and four fifties. He also became the second player after Robin Uthappa to win an Orange Cap and the ITL title in the same season.
