Gautam Gambhir recalls childhood mischiefs that got him suspended from school

Former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir had quite a few infamous fights during his international career. In 2007, Gambhir fought with former Pakistan skipper Shahid Afridi during an ODI in Kanpur. Three years later, he once again fought with another Pakistani cricketer during the Asia Cup. At that time, he fought with former wicketkeeper-batter Kamran Akmal as the former was upset with the constant appeal for his dismissal. In 2013, during the Indian T20 League, the then Kolkata skipper fought with the then Bangalore skipper Virat Kohli.
Meanwhile, during an interaction, Gambhir shed light on his fights during school days which got him suspended from school. “I’ve got into a lot of fights in school… In 12th standard, when every kid wants to go to school, attend the last days, and I was playing Ranji Trophy as well – I got suspended for two months. I straightaway sat in the board exams after that. Even my prefect badge was taken away. We had gone to Mayo College and were playing this ITSC tournament and we got into a fight with DPS,” said Gambhir in a conversation with Jatin Sapru on his YouTube show, Over and Out.
He also revealed another incident where he was involved in a shoe fight, where he damaged a portrait of the headmaster while staying in the latter’s house. The left-hander added that the portrait was bought by the headmaster from Oman, which got damaged due to shoe spikes.
“We also did another thing which I now realize was very wrong. As kids you are full of fervour. We were staying in Oman House. The man on whose name that House was built, had brought a huge portrait with a massive frame from Oman. At night, we had a shoe fight with spikes and all and ruined that picture. The headmaster of that House starting crying,” he added.
