The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has faced another blow just after allegedly losing the hosting rights of Asia Cup 2023. It is most likely that the venue of the Champions Trophy 2025 can be changed from Pakistan to the West Indies and the United States of America (USA) for which there will be monetary compensation.

According to recent reports, the Apex Cricket Council is thinking of changing the venues for the upcoming major events – the 2024 T20 World Cup (in West Indies and the USA) and the 2025 Champions Trophy (in Pakistan). Earlier, News 18 reported that the Cricket Governing Body can shift the venue for 2024 20-20 World Cup from West Indies and USA to Ireland and Scotland, while on the other hand, the venue for the 2025 Champions Trophy can be shifted to West Indies and the USA from Pakistan.

The current infrastructure situation in the USA is not very encouraging

Despite the fact that the discussions are still in the early stages, sources with a close understanding of the situation have disclosed that the probability of this happening is increased since the USA lacks the necessary infrastructure to host the multi-team competition.

“The current infrastructure situation in the USA is not very encouraging. Even if they successfully host the upcoming Major League Cricket, hosting an event like the 20-20 World Cup is a different ball game altogether. Where will you host the matches when the venues aren’t ready? Also, a long tournament in the far west could be a loss-making proposition for the broadcasters in the sub-continent, where the returns are highest,” sources close to the information were quoted as saying on News18.

The report further asserted that not a single country has signed the official “hosting agreements” yet, who are involved in the hosting arrangements. The following process will take place in July during the Cricket Governing Body’s annual conference in Durban. The Apex Cricket Council can urge the Pakistan Cricket Board to agree to the swap.
