South Africa hammered England in the ODI World Cup 2023 contest. On a flat batting wicket, South Africa brought their A game and made the defending champions look ordinary. South Africa outplayed England in all three departments and controlled the game throughout with collective efforts from all the members of the team.  England had no answer to South Africa whatsoever.

Having won the toss, Jos Buttler opted to field first, a decision which he regretted later. Although England dismissed Quinton De Kock early, South Africa quickly recovered from the early blip. Beuran Hendricks and Rassie Van Der Dussen scored fifty for themselves and revived the innings of South Africa. Under scorching heat and humidity, all the players struggled to play in the middle.

Aiden Markram also played his part. But the stars of the show were the duo of Heinrich Klaasen and Marco Jansen. The duo scored runs mercilessly against the English bowlers. The game was in a good tempo till the two joined. They hammered the bowlers and took the game away from England instantly. Klaasen scored a hundred in quick time and Jansen scored a quick-fire fifty.

As a result, South Africa ended up registering 399 runs in their 50 overs, which is the second-highest score of the tournament. The shoulders were down at that point, and England was down and out. South Africa was just all over England. Marco Jansen was lethal with the new ball and dismissed Joe Root and Dawid Malan. Kagiso Rabada dismissed Ben Stokes.

Lungi Ngidi got rid of Jonny Bairstow. Gerald Coetzee ran through the rest of the batting order. It was a game which was defined by the mental strength of South Africa. They were relentless and gave no chance to England. Mark Wood and Gus Atkinson played some fine cameos in the end and helped to control the damage of the net run rate. But England lost the match by a huge margin of 229 runs, which is their biggest loss in ODIs in terms of runs.
