Pakistan defeats Sri Lanka to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match Test series. Imam-ul-Haq batted unbeaten on 50 as Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka by four wickets on the final day of the first Test. Pakistan began the day on 48-3, chasing 131, and lost three more wickets, including skipper Babar Azam for 24. Throughout most of their first innings, their batting strategy suggested they may try to finish this chase in as few overs as possible.

Prabath Jayasuriya and Ramesh Mendis slowed them right away, finding tremendous turn and combining it with pinpoint precision. Pakistan needed only 83 runs to cross the finish line at the start of Day 5, and they wasted no time this morning. It assumed that the ball would do the majority of the talking on the last day.

Pakistan won a test match after 365 days

Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat first. Dhananjay De Silva, who scored 122 in Sri Lanka’s first-innings total of 312, formed key partnerships, including a 76-run seventh-wicket stand with Ramesh Mendis, who made 42 runs. In reply, Pakistan managed 461 runs, but they were in early trouble because their top order, with the exception of Shan Masood, no one else did not contribute much. However, it was the massive 177-run stand between Agha Salman and Saud Shakeel that got them out of a bind, as they were battling at 101-5 at one point. Shakeel was as consistent as ever, scoring a stunning maiden double-hundred.

Jayasuriya got two top-order wickets of Pakistan in the last session Tuesday, removing Abdullah Shafique for 8 runs and Shan Masood for 7 runs. Meanwhile, nightwatchman Nauman Ali was apprehended after trying a second suicide run. But the Pakistan batter arrived prepared, using their feet extensively to deal with the spin. For the guests, it became like a walk in the park in the end. Saud Shakeel’s cameo let them in wrapping things up swiftly.  The left-handed batter wins the Player of the Match award for his exceptional double-century.

The next test will be played in Colombo on the 24th of July.
