After clinching the Ashes 2023, Australia is locking horns with England in the fifth and final Test match of the series. After the end of play on Day Two of the Test match, the visitors have a slight advantage over the Three Lions as they lead them by 12 runs. Earlier in the first innings, the hosts were bundled out for 283 runs.

Meanwhile, star England bowler, Stuart Broad revealed that umpire Kumar Dharmasena told him that if there was zing bails used in Ashes 2023 then Steve Smith would have been given out on the second day at The Oval, but he was convinced with the decision which was given in favour of the right-hand batter.

“I honestly don’t know the rules. I think there was enough grey area to give that not out. It looked like the benefit of the doubt sort of stuff, the first angle I saw I thought out, and then the side angle it looked like the bails probably dislodged,” Broad was quoted as saying after the end of play on Day Two.

I was like, gee, this guy’s tearing around the boundary, he’s coming at pace: Steve Smith

“Kumar said to me if it was zing bails it would be given out, I don’t really understand the reasoning why,” he added. Under the Laws, the bail has to be completely removed. Law 29.1 states: “The wicket is broken when at least one bail is completely removed from the top of the stumps, or one or more stumps is removed from the ground.”

Smith asserted that he had started walking off after seeing the replay on the big screen. “I saw the initial replay and saw the bail come up, and when I looked at it the second time looked like Jonny might have knocked the bail before the ball had come,” the 34-year-old stated. “I know now that he’s very quick,” he said.

“The next one we hit out there when it was a similar push for two, I was like, gee, this guy’s tearing around the boundary, he’s coming at pace. Had I known that previously I might have just stayed there for the single,” the former Australia skipper added.
