India’s star opening batsman Shubman Gill is all set to miss out on the second match of India against Afghanistan in the ODI World Cup 2023 which will be hosted by India at self across 10 vibrant city venues. The team will take on Afghanistan, on 11 October at the Feroz Shah Kotla (now renamed as the Arun Jaitley Stadium) in the heart of India, Delhi. 

There were multiple reports that Shubman Gill had been diagnosed with dengue and is down with a high fever and has been ruled out of the first match of the tournament, which was later confirmed by Rohit Sharma at the toss during the team’s match against Australia.

Now the Indian cricket board has officially declared that Shubman Gill will be staying back in Chennai with the medical team for further supervision and will not be travelling to Delhi. 

The Indian Cricket Board’s official statement on Shubman Gill’s absence

“Team India batter Shubman Gill will not be travelling with the team to Delhi on 9th October 2023. The opening batter who missed the team’s first fixture in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 against Australia in Chennai is set to miss the team’s next fixture against Afghanistan in Delhi on the 11th of October. He will stay back in Chennai and will be under the supervision of the medical team”, said Jay Shah, Honorary Secretary of the Indian Cricket Board in an official statement. 

While mentioning Shubman Gill’s absence at the toss during India’s match against Australia, Rohit Sharma said, “The conditions are there for the bowlers and the ball will turn as the game goes on, you need to understand what line and lengths to bowl and adjust accordingly. We played a lot of cricket before that, we played two good series before the warm-up games, we have covered all bases. Unfortunately, he (Shubman Gill) didn’t recover in time, we waited till today morning and he couldn’t recover. Ishan comes in to replace him, he will open the batting.”
