Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are currently locking horns for the 38th match of the ODI World Cup 2023 at The Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. Just during the first innings of the game, the match has become historical as for the first time in the history of the sport, a batsman has been dismissed for being timed out.

Notably, the Sri Lankan middle-order batsman Angelo Matthews walked to the crease to bat after the dismissal of Sadeera Samarawickrama. However Mathews was sent back to the pavilion by the on-field empires and the captain of the Bangladesh team, Shakib Al Hasan as he took more than three minutes to be prepared to face the first ball.

As per the rule by MCC, “After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball, or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 3 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed out.”

‘My point of view is it’s not good for the spirit of the game’ – Charith Asalanka

As the discussion between Shakib and the on-field umpire began as a joke, Angelo asked the 12th man for a spare helmet since the one he was wearing was broken. Shakib and Co. appealed to the umpire that Matthew was taking more than three minutes and needed to be signed out and sent back to the pavilion without even facing a ball.

The Sri Lankan middle order batsman Charith Asalanka opined about Angelo Matthews’ Times out dismissal against Bangladesh in the innings break after scoring a century, and said, “My point of view is it’s not good for the spirit of the game. After that, Dhananjaya came and we had a good partnership. I love to have a partnership with Dhananjaya because he is a right-hander and I’m a left-hander and he always scores quickly. Credit should go to the pitches because we can hit the ball through the line. When I was batting, I was looking for 300 but unfortunately, I got out in the 49th over. But, I think we have got enough.”
