The Apex Cricket Council (ACC) has introduced a trial of the stop clock in a bid to accelerate the pace of play in international cricket. The trial will specifically apply to Full Member Men’s ODI and T20I matches. The trial is scheduled to commence with the first T20I match between the West Indies and England. The match is set for December 12 in Barbados. This trial will be implemented over the course of approximately 59 fixtures between December 2023 and April 2024. At the conclusion of the trial period, they will evaluate the results and effectiveness of the stop clock.

The stop clock will enforce a time limit between overs. Initiating the first ball of the subsequent over within 60 seconds is a requirement. This applies after concluding the previous one for the bowling team. Failure to do so may result in penalties for the team. The fielding team will five-run penalty on the third violation after two warnings in an inning.

“We are continually looking at ways to speed up the pace of play across international cricket. The stop-clock trial in white-ball international cricket follows the introduction of a successful new playing condition in 2022, which resulted in the fielding team only being allowed four fielders outside of the inner circle if they were not in a position to bowl the first ball of their final over in the stipulated time. The outcomes of the stop clock trial will be assessed at the end of the trial period,” Wasim Khan said.
