ATK Mohun Bagan, the winner of the Indian Super League for the years 2022–2023, will be known as Mohun Bagan Super Giant beginning from June 1, the team said on Wednesday.

Sanjiv Goenka, the club’s owner, had previously promised that the name will change after the Mariners defeated Bengaluru FC in the ISL 2022–23 championship game at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Goa earlier this year.

“From next season the club will be known as Mohun Bagan Super Giant. We were waiting for the [ISL final] win to announce it,” Goenka had said after the final.

The football team’s history dates back to 2014 when it was known as Atletico de Kolkata. The group defeated Kerala Blasters in the championship game to claim victory in the tournament’s first year. Luis Garcia, a previous Champions League champion with Liverpool, joined the team that year as its star player.

ATK Mohun Bagan – The most successful team of ISL

The team united with Mohun Bagan, one of the oldest football teams in India, in 2020 to form ATK Mohun Bagan. In its first full season under the new name, it made it to the finals. This squad won its first trophy in March by defeating Bengaluru 4-3 on penalties.

In the meanwhile, supporters of Mohun Bagan have conducted many demonstrations in opposition to the prefix “ATK”. ‘Goenka Out’ and ‘Remove ATK’ banners have been spotted during Mariners home games. Goenka announced the move after the ISL championship, and the club’s official Twitter account confirmed the change’s date on May 17.

They have put together one of the league’s most star-studded schedules, are the current domestic champions, and will represent their nation in the AFC Cup. The only thing keeping ATK Mohun Bagan in check was what was happening off the pitch, notably the supporters’ resentment at the administration.

However, since the Mohun Bagan Super Giants period has begun, the fans have been more interested in the club’s activities and have pledged to pack the stadium in large numbers the next season. With their massive fan base now on their side, the Mariners, who already possess the best football skill, might become an unstoppable danger to every other ISL club.
