Australia, England receive fines and points deduction due to slow over-rates in 1st Test of Ashes 2023
The first Ashes Test between Australia and England took place at Edgbaston from June 16 to 20 and it was a thrilling contest. With their two-wicket victory, the visitors made history and now lead the five-match series 1-0. After the battle, both teams were penalized by two points for having a slow over-rate in the match that marked up the third cycle of the World Test Championship (WTC).
In addition to losing points, the arch-rivals were two overs short of their target when time allowances were factored into account. They were consequently penalized for 40% of their match fees. Andy Pycroft, the match official, imposed the penalties. There is reportedly no need for a formal hearing because both captains, Pat Cummins and Ben Stokes, have admitted the fault.
“Andy Pycroft of the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the sanctions after both teams were ruled to be two overs short of their targets after time allowances were taken into consideration,” the Apex Cricket Council said in a statement.
“Australia captain Pat Cummins and England counterpart Ben Stokes accepted the sanctions, meaning there was no need for formal hearings,” it added further.
Australia also received 80 per cent match fee sanctions in the recently concluded WTC Final.
Furthermore, the recently concluded World Test Championship (WTC) Final between Australia and India resulted in 80 per cent match fee sanctions for Australia, India received a full 100% match fee fine for maintaining a slow over-rate.
Meanwhile, the visitor, who had been given a 281-run target, commenced the day on 107 for 3, yet when they were reduced to 227-8, it seemed like they had not much chance of succeeding. However, Cummins staged the comeback together with Nathan Lyon, and they ended up winning with an unbeaten 44. Australia is off to an impressive start in its defence of the trophy. On Wednesday, June 28, at Lord’s, the second Test is slated for taking place.
