India started their World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 cycle on a high note as they restricted West Indies to just 150. Ravichandran Ashwin’s 33rd Test match fifer derailed the West Indian batting, with only debutant Alick Athanaze contributing significantly. Ashwin, who returned to the Indian squad after missing the WTC final last month, got his 33rd five-wicket haul on the opening day of the first Test against a below-par West Indies on Wednesday. Ravindra Jadeja took three wickets in the opening session at Windsor Park, as the two spinners dominated.

Shardul Thakur dismissed Raymon Reifer for two runs. Before the lunch break, Mohmmad Siraj bowled a one-handed blinder to give all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja his maiden wicket. Mohmmad Siraj bowled well and took one wicket. The Indians will want to get off to a good start on Day 2. On the other hand, the West Indies will want early wickets to build an upper hand on the Test match.

Match Highlights (Day 1)

Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal got off to a fast start. The unbeaten debutant left-handed hitter has 40 runs off 73 balls. Captain Rohit Sharma, who scored 30 from 65 balls, was a supportive innings by the Indian skipper just the start India needed before ending Day 1. India’s total in 23 overs is 80/0, and they are down by 70 runs at Windsor Park.

Ashwin at the end of Day 1 stated, “Thought it was a pretty good performance. There was a bit of moisture on the pitch earlier but it started to spin later. Saw on the TV as well that it turned more later. Had to adapt early. It was a bit dry, have to get the pace right to trouble the batsmen. International cricket is all about adapting to different conditions. With so many leagues around, we can get carried away with a few performances in these leagues but international cricket is different.”

He further added, “He just reverse-swept the first ball of the last over! That’s what you can expect from him. He is very vibrant, hope he goes far. From our side, we hope to keep the environment good for him.”
