 BCCI calls for bids for the broadcasting rights of the Indian T20 League

The Indian T20 League is the grandest and most glamorous T20 league in the world. Cricket fans around the world wait for each of its seasons to begin. The number of viewers the league attracts makes it the most-watched cricketing action. This creates an urge among top brands to be associated with the cash-rich league. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has invited bidders for the broadcast and digital rights of the tournament for the period between 2023 and 2027.

The current owners of the media rights for the tournament are the Disney-owned Star India. They won the bid for five years ending this season with a bid amounting to INR 16,000 Cr. The digital streaming rights belong to their OTT platform Disney+ HotStar.

BCCI announced that the tender documents for the media rights of the tournament are available through a Tweet on their official Twitter page. The Tweet made by Jay Shah; the secretary of BCCI read – “I’m pleased to announce that @BCCI has issued the tender document for Indian T20 League media rights for seasons 2023-27. With 2 new teams, more matches, more engagement, more venues, we are looking to take Indian T20 League to newer and greater heights.” This will be the first time an e-auction will be held, since the inception Indian T20 League, to determine the owner of the media rights of the cash-rich league for the next cycle.

 

The Indian T20 League has shifted from an 8-teams format to a 10-teams format this year The number of games has in the tournament has also increased from 60 to 74. Things are expected to get grander for the tournament from here on.

Broadcasters competing with Star for the media rights of the next cycle are reported to be Zee, Sony and Reliance Viacom 18. The competitors for digital rights are expected to be Amazon Prime, Meta and YouTube and Disney+ HotStar.

Those interested in bidding for the media rights can obtain the tender document by paying a fee of INR 25 Lakhs. The Initial Tender Document is available for purchase till 10th May 2022.
