Brett Lee pens a heartfelt message for the late Andrew Symonds
The former Australian pacer Brett Lee who had been a teammate of Andrew Symonds for an extended period of time has penned an emotional message in tribute to the late all-rounder. Stunning the cricketing fraternity Symonds passed away following a fatal car accident on May 14 (Saturday). Brett Lee and Symonds have played 171 international matches together in the period between 2000 and 2009. Thus, Brett Lee has paid his tribute to his teammate and friend.
Lee said that Symonds never played for money or fame. He would be happy as long as he was able to get a cold beer. He also stated that he has known the all-rounder since the age of 17 and opined that Symonds was one of the most gifted players he has ever witnessed.
Brett Lee’s Tweet read- “I knew Roy since the age of 17 from junior cricket. One of the most gifted athletes I’ve ever witnessed. He didn’t play for money or fame; these things were irrelevant to him. As long as he could afford to wet a line and have a cold beer, Roy was happy. First picked in any team.”
Speaking about Symonds’ playing career, the swashbuckling all-rounder represented Australia in 26 Tests, 198 ODIs, and 14 T20Is. He made his international debut in 1998 and played for the last time in 2009 in Australian colors. In the ODIs Symonds scored 5088 runs at an average of 39.44, while in the shortest format of the game, he scored 337 runs at an average of 48.14. He was equally efficient in the longest format of the game where he scored 1462 runs at an average of 40.61.
He had 42 fifties and eight centuries to his name across all formats of the game. While with the ball he picked up 165 wickets with a five-wicket haul in the 50-overs format. Symonds was also a part of the Indian T20 League 2022, featuring for Hyderabad and Mumbai. In his ITL career, he played 39 matches in which he scored 974 runs at an average of 36.07. He also had five half-centuries and a century to his name.
