‘Chota packet, badha dhamaka’ – Fans react as Temba Bavuma slams magnificent century against Australia in first ODI

After losing the three-match T20I series 3-0, South Africa locked horns with Australia in the first ODI of the five-match ODI series at the Mangaung Oval, in Bloemfontein on September 7. The Men in Yellow won the toss and elected to bowl first. The Protean skipper, Temba Bavuma scored a magnificent century and was the lone warrior for his team.

The home side, South Africa while batting first was bundled out for 222 after playing 49 overs in the first innings. The highest scorer for the side was Bavuma. He played an unbeaten knock of 114 runs off 142 balls which included 14 fours and a six in his innings. More than half of the runs were scored by him. In the end, Marco Jansen scored a crucial 32 runs from 40 balls knock which included three fours and a six in his innings.

The pick of the bowlers for Australia was Josh Hazelwood, who snapped three wickets in his spell of 10 overs where he conceded 41 runs and bowled two maiden overs in his spells. Two wickets were grabbed by star Australia all-rounder, Marcus Stoinis who conceded 20 runs in his spell of six overs. One wicket each was bagged by Sean Abbott, Ashton Agar, Adam Zampa, and Cameron Green in their respective spells where they conceded 40 runs, 40 runs, 42 runs, and 32 runs respectively.

“Happy to have scored today. It was surely not the wicket we expected, they bowled well and there was variable bounce. Feeling a bit of a cramp but it’s definitely better, I’ll be out there. I’m captain and I’ll be the captain out there in the second innings,” Bavuma was quoted as saying in the mid-innings interview after scoring a brilliant ton.
