Cricket Governing Council sustains major losses after falling to phishing scams

In what comes as shocking news, World Cricket Governing Council has become a victim of Phishing. It is a form of cybercrime that preys on personal data. In this, scamsters target victims over email, telephone, or text messages by imitating legitimate institutions or persons. They lure companies or individuals into sharing sensitive information such as personal details, phone numbers, bank details, credit card details, and passwords. It results in identity theft or financial losses.
Fraudsters offer eye-catching deals to lure victims into sharing sensitive information. Fraudsters offer holiday deals or monetary benefits or lucrative prizes in emails or text messages. The shared links often contain malware that infects computers or phones to record sensitive details without the victim’s knowledge. At times, fraudsters use databases purchased from Phone or Credit card companies. By using the data, they target victims. The attackers pose as if they know the victims up close and use their vulnerable situation.
Apex Council lost a whopping 203 crores INR due to the fraud
Meanwhile, the Apex Council has lost 203 crores INR. It might not be a big figure for India, England, and Australia. However, for some other boards, this is a huge figure. Associate nations (The national sides who don’t play Test Cricket or ODI) earn this much amount which was lost to the scam. An associate board member expressed his disbelief over the matter.
“It can’t be true. An ODI Associate 13-20 ranked can get anything between 500,000 to one million,” an official of an associate nation, told Cricbuzz.
Talking about the timeline of the incident, it is unknown when the incident took place. It came to light on the night of January 19.
