Ahead of the 20-20 World Cup, Virat Kohli announced that he will relinquish T20 captaincy after the 20-20 World Cup. The news was a major shock to the cricket fanatics. However, given the workload Virat Kohli has been carrying over the years, many felt it was the right decision. Soon after speculation about the new India skipper started doing rounds. India vice-captain Rohit Sharma’s name was the most talked about. However, a few felt that someone like KL Rahul or Rishabh Pant can also take over the charge of team.
Now, Virat Kohli himself has given a big hint on the next India skipper. Kohli said that Rohit Sharma has been overlooking things for a while, hinting that he will be the next India skipper. “I think it’s time for the next lot to stake this team forward. Obviously, Rohit is here and he’s overlooking things for a while now,” Kohli said after winning a rare toss against Namibia.
He also shed light on his captaincy tenure and said it was an honour to lead the team and it’s time for the next lot to take over. “It’s been an honour for me, I was given the opportunity and I tried to do my best. But it’s also time to create some space and move forward. I’ve been immensely proud of how the team has played,” Kohli added.
Meanwhile, the match will also mark the end of the term for head coach Ravi Shastri, bowling coach Bharat Arun and fielding coach R Sridhar, who will vacate their slots after the match.
