Sri Lanka’s Dushmantha Chameera marks his entry to the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the Kolkata Knight Riders as a replacement for Gus Atkinson. KKR has bought Chameera for INR 50 Lakhs. Moreover, Gus Atkinson has pulled out of the IPL 2024 because of the upcoming T20I World Cup in June 2024. He is the second player after Mark Wood to do so. The IPL management announced the replacement of Chameera ahead of the tournament.

The release said, “Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have named Dushmantha Chameera as a replacement for England pacer Gus Atkinson for the upcoming edition of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Chameera will join KKR at a reserve price of INR 50 Lakh.”

Chameera was a part of the Rajasthan Royals, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and the Lucknow Super Giants in the year 2018, 2021, and 2022 seasons. Moreover, in the 2022 season, he picked up nine wickets in 12 matches. This wasn’t a great season for the Sri Lankan seamer. Moreover, after joining the KKR team he’ll be hoping to perform well ahead of the World Cup 2024.

Dushmantha Chameera returns from injury

Ahead of the beginning of the IPL, the KKR team will be happy as they got the Sri Lankan player, Dushmantha Chameera, in their team. However, in the previous T20I series against Afghanistan, he was injured and was replaced by Binura Fernando. As per Sri Lanka’s team manager, Chameera is better now but the nature of his injury is still unknown. They are waiting for confirmation from the specialist and hoping for a positive response. Moreover, Chameera is expected to be fine before the start of the IPL.

Sri Lanka’s team manager Mahinda Halangoda told ESPNcricinfo, “He’s feeling better now, but we won’t know for sure the exact nature of his injury until we hear back from the specialist.”
