The 28-year-old West Indies all-rounder Fabian Allen was attacked and robbed at gunpoint in a shocking incident during his stint with the Paarl Royals in the SA20 2024, leaving the cricketer shell-shocked.

Fabian Allen was targeted outside the renowned Sandton Sun Hotel where goons surrounded him, taking away his phone, a bag and other personal belongings. Sources from Cricket West Indies (CWI), Paarl Royals and SA20 confirmed the incident. Fortunately, Allen remained unharmed in the incident.

Exactly what happened during the incident?

According to Cricbuzz, the assailants held a gun and encountered Allen near the Sandton Sun Hotel, thereby taking his phone and other personal belongings, including his bag. A spokesperson of the SA20 League redirected the inquiries to a police official, who at that time did not have any immediate information. Moreover, the player himself could not be reached out to for a comment either.

“Our head coach Andre Coley, also hailing from Jamaica, reached out to Fabian. Contact was successfully established through Obed McCoy (another West Indies international). He is fine. CSA (Cricket South Africa) and his team, Paarl Royals, could share more details if there are any,” a CWI official told Cricbuzz.

Paarl Royals and Fabian Allen performed in this year’s SA20

The Royals have made their way through to the playoffs after finishing fourth in the table at the end of the league stage with 22 points and a net run rate of -0.544. Royals win in 5 out of 10 matches. The Royals were once on a rampage after they lost only 1 out of their first 7 matches. However, they will be low on confidence after losing 4 matches in a row at the hands of Durban’s Super Giants and Sunrisers Eastern Cape.

The Royals are now set to lock horns with Joburg Super Kings in the Eliminator on Wednesday, February 7 at The Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg. As far as Allen is concerned, he hasn’t had the best of campaigns for the Royals. In 8 matches, he has scored 38 runs at an average of 7.60 and a strike rate of 140.74 with a top score of 17 not out. Allen has picked up only 2 wickets at an economy rate of 8.87.
