FIFA World Cup 2022: Group B- England enter Round of 16 with a statement, USA go through with a nervy win
At midnight of November 29th, the FIFA World Cup 2022 saw two more clashes that provided two teams to the Round of 16. England and USA managed to breach the next round while campaigns of Wales and Iran were ended. Let’s look at how the two games panned out.
Iran vs USA
Cristian Pulisic opened the scoring in the 38th minute to give the USA the lead in their do-or-die match. Iran huffed and puffed but could not claw back the lead after failing to come close in the 90 minutes.
In the end, the USA with 5 points in 3 matches came second in Group B and went through to the Round of 16. Iran needed just a draw to go through but they failed to do so and hence their campaign has ended as a result of it.
England vs Wales
England clashed with the noisy neighbours Wales in a Group B match where they had a chance to go top and enter the Round of 16 with a statement win. Wales had a chance to keep their hopes alive with a win but they failed to do so.
The two changes made to the England side i.e. Marcus Rashford and Phil Foden made an impact right away as both put their names in the scoresheet. Rashford opened the scoring in the 50th minute whereas Foden doubled the team just one minute later.
Rashford was on the scoresheet again in the 68th minute as he shoots a low shot into the net after latching onto a Kevin Philips through ball. Notably, this was England’s 100th goal at the World Cup. Rashford with two goals has taken his tally to 3 as England become the team with most number of goals (9) at the FIFA World Cup 2022.
