The Gujarat Titans and Punjab Kings met at IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali to take on each other in the 18th match of the Indian Premier League 2023. The coin fell in the favour of GT and they decided to bowl first. PBKS did not have the best of the beginnings as Prabhsimran Singh was dismissed by Mohammed Shami for a two-ball duck. Shikhar Dhawan, who scored a spectacular 99 in the previous game, couldn’t get going as he fell to Joushua Little for just 8 runs.

Matthew Short came in at number three and made a bright and breezy 36 off 24 balls with six fours and one six. This knock provided some much needed impetus into Punjab’s innings. Bhanuka Rajapaksa did not look comfortable at all in his 20 off 26 balls with one four. The Sri Lankan fell to Alzarri Joseph, while Jitesh Sharma made 25 off 23 balls with five fours. But he could not kick on. He got out to Mohit Sharma, who was making an IPL comeback after two years.

Shubman Gill played a superb hand of 67 off 49 balls to win the game for GT

Sam Curran tried hard to tonk a few big hits but the Englishman could manage only 22 off 22 balls with one four and one six. When all seemed lost for PBKS, Shahrukh Khan provided the ray of hope by making a quickfire 22 off 9 balls with one four and two sixes. This timely knock helped PBKS get to 153-8 in their 20 overs to give them a fighting chance. Mohit Sharma, with excellent figures of 2-18 in his four overs, was the pick of the bowlers for GT.

In the second innings, GT got off to a good start, courtesy of Wriddhiman Saha. The wicketkeeper batter made 30 off 19 balls with five fours before he got out to Kagiso Rabada. Sai Sudharsan came in at number 3 but could not get going. He got out to Arshdeep Singh after scoring 19 off 20 balls with two fours.

Hardik Pandya came in at four but was dismissed by Harpreet Brar after scoring 8 off 11 balls with one four. Gill played a superb hand of 67 off 49 balls with seven fours and one six. He was clean bowled by Curran and game went to the last over with four runs needed off two balls. In the penultimate ball, Rahul Tewatia hit the winning boundary and sealed the deal for Gujarat Titans.
