Former India opener Virender Sehwag affirmed that every citizen of India is incredibly keen to see Virat Kohli win the ODI World Cup 2023. The former further asserted that Kohli is expected to be essential to the nation’s quest to win the trophy. Notably, the 34-year-old Chase Master has been deemed to be the finest player India has produced so far in modern cricket. The stylish right-handed batter is India’s second-highest run scorer in the 50-over format, following behind the legendary Sachin Tendulkar. He has struck 46 hundred while compiling 12898 runs at an average of 57.32 while featuring in 274 ODIs.

Meanwhile, India won the ODI World Cup in 2011 at the Wankhede Stadium, nearly twelve years ago, and at that moment, young Virat lifted Sachin Tendulkar over his shoulders as the squad made an emphatic victory gap of around 28 years. The team’s accomplishment in the 2011 World Cup, which happened to be Tendulkar’s penultimate tournament, provided a magnificent farewell to the icon.

I think Virat is similar. He is in Tendulkar’s shoes:  Virender Sehwag

In the same vein, Veteran cricketer Virender Sehwag, who was also one of the prominent players in the 2011 World Cup-winning squad, reckons the Indian squad ought to give it all they have in order to capture the World Cup for their former skipper.

“I still remember when Sachin Tendulkar was playing the 2011 World Cup, which turned out to be his last one. We had told him it would be his last World Cup, as we did in 2007 and even in 2003. He told me at the time that I will retire after you. And he actually ended up retiring after me. We played that World Cup for Tendulkar. We gave more than our 100 percent thinking that if we win this, it is a great exit for Sachin paaji,” Sehwag remarked following the release of the schedule, as cited by the Hindustan Times.

“I think Virat is similar. He is in Tendulkar’s shoes in the way he plays, talks, motivates others, the passion with which he plays. He is the one now and everybody is looking to win this World Cup for Virat Kohli,” he added further.
