The Australian team management and captain Pat Cummins have been in deep thought to name the new opening batsman for the team. Marnus Labuschagne recently opined about Steven Smith taking the role of the opening batsman for the Aussies in test Cricket. The opening batsman David Warner recently announced his retirement from the Red Ball cricket While making his way to open for the team.

Former captain Steve Smith has recently shown his interest in taking the position, considering his high average and performance over the years the team management might consider him for the position. Australia won the next play against West Indies after the conclusion of Pakistan’s tour of Australia, where in the Aussies whitewashed the latter with a 3-0 win.

Previously, Steve Smith talked to ABC Grandstand and discussed taking the opener’s spot while replacing David Warner. He said, “I’m actually happy to go up the top. I’m pretty keen if that’s what they want to do. I’m sure the selectors and Ron [Andrew McDonald] and Patty [Cummins] will have a chat after this game but yeah, I’m certainly interested for sure.”

In an exclusive conversation with SEN Cricket, Marnus Labuchagne highlighted Smith’s batting average and said, “He averages 58 at five, 61 at four and 67 at three, so it seems like the higher he goes the more he averages. I’ve got no doubt if that’s the way we went, he would do very well. He really wants it, he wants that motivation… waiting to bat is not his forte, he wants to get out there straight away,”

“I’m happy to do what the team needs, but I do love batting at three, I love the variety of the role. At the moment it could be anyone… I’ve seen the media throwing around Travis Head, throwing around me, obviously the three openers outside of the squad, Cameron Bancroft, Matt Renshaw and Marcus Harris. Smudge (Steve Smith) seems like the lead frontrunner, the one that really wants it,” he added.
