There are many ways a batter can be dismissed. Out of them, the most popular ones are bowled, caught, leg before wicket, run out, stumped, caught and bowled, and caught behind. These are conventional ways of getting dismissed and are usually the modes in which the batters get dismissed. But there are other modes of dismissals in cricket which are rare and are not conventional.

Some of the most unconventional ways of getting out are Hit wicket, Timed out, Mankading, Obstruction of field, and so on. This is how batters do not get dismissed often. But there are instances where such dismissals happen, and every viewer of the sport discusses the need for such dismissals. While some take the side of the rules of the game, others take the side of the spirit of the game.

Here are some of the batters who have been dismissed in different ways for the first time in international cricket.

5. First hit wicket

Roy Fredericks was an aggressive strokemaker, who mostly played for the West Indies in the 1970s. Back in time, Fredericks was known for his fearlessness. In the inaugural edition of the ODI World Cup in 1975, Fredericks was dismissed via hit wicket. It was the first instance of a batter getting dismissed in the mode of a hit wicket in the history of the World Cup.

4. First DRS

For the first time in international cricket, DRS was used to check referrals in the year 2008. In a Test match between India and Sri Lanka in Colombo, the decision review system was implemented. In the same Test, a batter was given out. On the 23rd of July in 2008, India’s Virender Sehwag became the first ever batter to be dismissed with a referral through a decision review system.

3. First Timed out

In the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023, Angelo Mathews found a strange way to get dismissed. The Sri Lankan batter could not face his first ball within the first two minutes of his stay in the middle, as he had to get his helmet changed. The opposition captain Shakib Al Hasan appealed for the dismissal. The on-field umpire, Marais Erasmus, signalled it out. In the process, Mathews became the first batter to be given ‘Timed out’.

2. First Marketing

In a Test match in 1948, India’s spin bowler Vinoo Mankad had run out the non-striker batter. Bill Brown, the Australian wicketkeeper batter was dismissed in the mode for the first time in Test cricket. Back then, the mode of dismissal did not have any name. So, the officials back then named the mode of dismissal as ‘Mankading’, as the former Indian bowler dismissed the batter the way for the first time.

1. First third umpire dismissal

India toured South Africa for a Test series in 1992. Back then, Sachin Tendulkar was 19 years old. In one of the Test matches in the tour, Sachin was given run out by the third umpire, Karl Liebenberg. For the first time in international cricket, a TV umpire declared a batter out. Tendulkar faced the runout, as Ravi Shastri denied taking a run and Jonty Rhodes inflicted the runout.
