Mohammed Shami, India’s prime pacer, has been ruled out of the Indian Premier League (IPL) due to an ankle injury. As IPL is set to start on March 22, Shami’s absence from the tournament is a huge blow to his team, Gujarat Lions. As he was leading the GT’s bowling attack, the team will miss him during the entire IPL. Since Rashid Khan is already injured and now that Shami is ruled out, the Titans will have an inexperienced side in terms of bowling.

Gujarat Titans won their first title in 2022 on debut under the leadership of Hardik Pandya. His calm and composed captaincy helped them win the first title and were the runners-up in the second season. However, Hardik has joined the Mumbai Indians team for the IPL 2024 season and will be captaining the side. Thus, Shubman Gill is the new captain of Gujarat Titans.

Shami was exceptional in both seasons of the IPL for GT as he picked up 20 wickets in 2022. Moreover, he did an even better performance in IPL 2023 by getting 28 wickets at an average of 18.64. The best part about Shami was his lethal bowling with the new ball. Thus, it will be difficult for GT to find a replacement like him.

‘IPL seems out of question’- An official opens up about Mohammed Shami

Ever since the World Cup 2023 ended, Mohammed Shami has been out of all the tournaments. Because of his injury, he was taking special injections, however, it didn’t work. As per an official, since Shami’s injections didn’t work, he’ll leave for the UK and then will go a surgery.

“Shami was in London in the last week of January to take special ankle injections and he was told that after three weeks, he can start light running and take it from thereon. But the injection hasn’t worked and now the only option left is surgery. He will shortly leave for the UK for surgery. IPL seems out of the question.” an official was quoted as saying by the Hindustan Times.
