 India women crowned first-ever champions in Badminton Asia Team championships after beating Thailand

History created by India women’s badminton team on Sunday in Selangor Malaysia. They won the Badminton Asia Team Championships crown for the first time in history. They beat Thailand by 3-2 in a nail-biting final match against Thailand.

Badminton women star Sindhu, Gayatri Gopichand-Treesa Jolly and 17-year-old teenage sensation Anmol Kharb won their respective matches followed by securing a 3-2 win by India on Sunday. It was a terrific final. India went up by 2-0 before Thailand made a strong comeback by 2-2 and forced a decider. Meanwhile, the teen prodigy Anmol played exceptionally well in the deciding match and was able to seal the deal and gave India a historic win.

India was terrific in the continental tournament, beating the likes of China, Hong Kong, Japan, and even Thailand in the final.  PV Sindhu, playing her first tournament after her return from an injury. She defeated Supaninda Katethong by 21-12, 21-12. The match ended in 39 minutes with India leading the point table by 1-0.

Post this, the 20-year-old Gayatri Gopichand and Jolly Treesa defeated Jongkolpham Kititharakul and Rawwinda Prajongjal in a tough three-game battle. During the match, Gayatri and Jolly were 6-11 down but they fought back from that position to beat the Thailand pair by 21-16, 18-21, 21-16.

The 24-year-old badminton player from Guwahati, Ashmita Chaliha was able to defeat the former world champion Nozomi Okuhara in the semi-final against Japan, lost to Busanan Ongbamrungphan by 11-21, 14-21. Another doubles pair Priya Konjengbam and Shruti Mishra also lost in straight games to Benyapa Aimsaard and Nuntakarn Aimsaard.

Anmol Kharb once again proved her worth in the decider. With her cool and composed demeanor, she defeated World No. 45 Pornpicha Choeikeewong in straight games to help secure a win. The 17-year-old had showcased immense maturity against the opponent, who was ahead of her prior to this.

Anmol Kharb was able to get the win in team India’s court by beating Pornpicha by 21-14, 21-9. The match ended in just 43 minutes. With this, the team was able to pen down India’s history in Badminton.
