Kolkata faced Rajasthan in the 47th match of the Indian T20 League 2022 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The pitch looked like a slowish one and there was enough assistance for the bowlers on it. The fans were thus treated to a low-scoring thriller.

Kolkata won the toss and chose to field first. Rajasthan was rocked early in their innings as Umesh Yadav dismissed Devdutt Padikkal (2 of 5) in the third over of the innings. Sanju Samson replaced Padikkal in the middle and started to progress steadily with Jos Buttler at the other end. The duo formed a 48 runs partnership before Buttler was dismissed in the ninth over of the innings by Tim Southee. Buttler looked uncomfortable during his stay and was able to score 22 runs off 25 deliveries before walking back to the pavilion. Samson at the other end looked determined and kept the innings together. He formed another important partnership of 35 runs with Karun Nair (13 of 13).

As Samson continued with his steady progress batters like Riyan Parag (19 of 12) and Shimron Hetmyer (27 of 13) batted around him increasing the scoring rate. Samson was ultimately dismissed in the 18th over the innings when his score was 54 off 49 deliveries. Rajasthan managed to reach a par total of 152 runs from their 20 overs. Tim Southee picked up two wickets for Kolkata conceding 46 runs off his four overs, while Sunil Narine was the most economical for them giving away just 19 runs of his full quota of overs.

Kolkata has been searching for a solution to their opening problems for a few matches now. Their search will probably continue as their new pair for the day just scored 16 runs in 3.1 overs. Aaron Finch ( 4 of 7) was the first wicket to fall for Kolkata dismissed by Kuldeep Sen. He was followed soon by Baba Indrajith (15 of 16) and Kolkata was struggling at 32 for 2 in 5.4 overs. It was at this stage that Nitish Rana joined hands with his skipper Shreyas Iyer and built a partnership of 60 runs from 43 balls. The duo took the attack on the spinners and slowly started to change the complexion of the game. But Iyer was dismissed in the 13th over of the innings putting an end to the dynamic partnership. Shreyas Iyer  scored 34 runs of 32 deliveries before walking back. As the 15th over of the innings came to an end Kolkata was stationed at 107 for 3. They still required 46 runs off the last 30 balls. With Nitish Rana in a good touch and Andre Russell still to come Kolkata was progressing towards a victory.

Nitish Rana was joined by Rinku Singh, who played a dynamic knock to take Kolkata home. He played an aggressive brand of cricket and releases the pressure for his team. In the end Kolkata won the match by 7 wickets with five balls remaining in the match. Rinku Singh (42 off 23) and Nitish Rana ( 48 off 37) stayed unbeaten guiding Kolkata to victory. This was Kolkata’s fourth victory in the tournament from four matches, while Rajasthan lost their second consecutive match.
