Punjab and Chennai faced off at the Wankhede Stadium in the 38th match of the Indian T20 League 2022. Chennai won the toss and opted to bowl. Punjab started steadily as they got 37 runs in the powerplay while losing Mayank Agarwal. The likes of Shikhar Dhawan and Bhanuka Rajapaksa scored most of the runs for the team. Rajapaksa had a point to prove as he was made to warm the bench even after doing well in the first few games. He scored 42 runs off 32 balls including two fours and as many sixes, striking at 131.25.
On the other hand, Dhawan scored 88 not out off 59 balls including nine fours and two sixes, striking at 149. 15. Liam Livingstone provided the finishing touches with 19 off seven and the team accumulated 187/4 at the end of the innings. In reply, the Men In Yellow needed a solid start but they lost three wickets for 40 runs in seven overs.
The likes of Robin Uthappa, Mitchell Santner, and Shivam Dube could not live up to the expectations. Ruturaj Gaikwad started well but couldn’t play a big inning as lost his wicket, with the team tottering at 89/4, needing further 99 runs in 7.3 overs.
Ambati Rayudu kept the team in the game with an explosive 78 off 39 before he was dismissed by Kagiso Rabada in the 18th over. The likes of Rabada and Arshdeep Singh bowled with discipline in the final overs, which meant that the four-time winners needed 27 runs in the last over.
Rishi Dhawan, who was playing the first game of the season, was asked to defend the runs with MS Dhoni on strike. Dhoni hit a six on the first ball of the over. However, Dhawan bounced back to dismiss Dhoni on the third ball of the over. Dhoni’s wicket meant that Chennai needed 20 of three balls. They went on to lose the match by 11 runs.
