Bangalore exhibited a stunning performance with the bat to crush Gujarat by 8 wickets on Thursday at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Faf du Plessis and Co. registered their 8th win and, thus, kept their hopes alive for the playoffs. Their qualification in the playoffs now depends on the match between Delhi and Chennai. Bangalore can only reach the playoffs if Delhi lose against Chennai on Saturday.

Talking about today’s game, Gujarat managed to compile a decent score of 168 runs in the first innings after winning the toss and opting to bat first. W Saha carried on his good form as he provided a pretty good start to the team. Shubman Gill (1 off 4), though, got out in the 3rd over of the innings off Hazelwood.

Mathew Wade, coming in at number three, also showed promise with the bat. He hit two fours and a six off Hazlewood in the 5th over to announce his arrival. However, on the second ball of the next ball, Wade (16 off 13) was given out leg-before in a controversial decision.

Gujarat could only manage 38 runs in the first 6 overs. Saha, who was looking good, unfortunately, got run-out in the 9th over. At the half-way stage, Gujarat had scored 78 runs for the loss of 3 wickets. David Miller then joined hands with Hardik Pandya and the duo made a pretty good recovery.

Miller played a valuable knock of 34 runs in 25 balls before getting out in the 17th over of the innings. Hardik Pandya, on the other hand, remained unbeaten right till the end of the innings. He took little risk and ensured he take the team to a competitive score on the board. Pandya went on to play an unbeaten knock of 62 runs in 47 balls but to no avail.

As for Bangalore, W Hasaranga (1 for 25) continued to impress one and all with his bowling exploits. Josh Hazlewood bowled well in the powerplay and also picked two wickets. However, he gave away little too many runs in the slog overs. The Australian batter returned with figures of 2 for 39 in 4 overs.

Chasing a 168-run total, Bangalore looked positive right from the start. Virat Kohli-the former Bangalore skipper- returned to form with a brilliant knock of 73 runs in 54 balls, including 8 fours and 2 sixes. Kohli looked a completely different batter and it never looked that he was out of form. He exhibited his full range of strokes and stayed at the crease till the 17th over of the innings.

Faf du Plessis also provided him a valuable support as the duo stitched a match-winning 115-run opening partnership. Bangalore skipper got out in the 15th over off Rashid Khan after scoring a handy knock of 44 runs in 38 balls. Rashid Khan then had Virat Kohli in the 17th over but Glenn Maxwell kept hitting boundaries at the other end. Maxwell’s unbeaten 18-ball 40 meant Bangalore chased down the score in 18.4 overs, thereby giving themselves the best chance of making a top-four finish.
