Anthony Albanese, Australia’s prime minister, has praised the Australian cricket team following criticism of Jonny Bairstow’s dismissal at Lord’s on Sunday, claiming that both the men’s and women’s teams are “always winning.” The comments on Tuesday come after the UK prime minister, Rishi Sunak, weighed in on the controversy.

Declaring that the Australian team had violated “the spirit of cricket” by stumping Bairstow when the England batter appeared to believe the ball was not in play during the second Ashes Test’s tense final day. The expulsion was crucial in Australia’s victory, giving them a 2-0 series lead with three Tests remaining, but it prompted an unpleasant response.

I’m proud of our men’s and women’s cricket teams: Anthony Albanese

Mr Sunak accused the Australians of violating the spirit of cricket on Monday, adding to the national outrage following Jonny Bairstow’s contentious stumping in the second Ashes Test at Lord’s. The Australian Prime Minister, on the other hand, used his official Twitter account to respond on Tuesday morning, showering praise on the men’s and women’s teams, both of which are having successful tours.

The 60-years-old said, “I’m proud of our men’s and women’s cricket teams, who have both won their opening two #Ashes matches against England,” Australia is right behind [Alyssa Healy], [Pat Cummins] and their teams and look forward to welcoming them home victorious.” Later the federal sports minister, Anika Wells, posted, “And just remember Australia bowled England out despite our spinner the [greatest of all time] Nathan Lyon being injured.”

The tourists’ thrilling 43-run success at the birthplace of cricket completed a contest packed with major moments, twists and turns, including English skipper Ben Stokes’ day-five innings of 155, which nearly swayed the game before his departure. However, the moment that transformed the entire tone of the series occurred earlier on the deciding day, when Bairstow walked out of his crease after a ball but before umpire, Ahsan Raza had called time.

The wicket was granted when Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey threw down the ball which went on to hit the stumps with Bairstow out of his ground, causing indignation from English supporters and afterwards nasty scenes in the Lord’s Long Room as MCC members approached Australian players including Usman Khawaja.
