‘It’s a blessing in disguise’- Brad Hogg feels being stripped off ODI captaincy might work in Kohli’s favour
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) appointed Rohit Sharma as the team’s ODI captain. It sacked Virat Kohli from the role which left the cricket world divided. A lot of former cricketers felt the treatment meted out to Kohli was inappropriate. Former Australia spinner Brad Hogg, however, feels it may be a blessing in disguise for Kohli who can now focus more on his batting.
“I think this is going to be better for Virat Kohli. It is going to improve his performances which have slightly dropped off slightly in the last couple of years when he’s been under pressure while captaining all three teams,” he concluded.
The cricketer-turned-expert further opined that both Kohli and Rohit Sharma should embrace and enjoy their respective roles. “Both of them have to embrace it, get in that changing room, and take Indian cricket forward,” stated Hogg.
Kohli is now only the captain of the Test team, with Rohit Sharma taking charge of the white-ball teams. The former Australia bowler felt it is a good move by BCCI to appoint different skippers for Test and limited overs format. “I think this is a good move. Kohli should just embrace it and relax about the whole situation and should concentrate on captaining the Test team. So basically, you’ve got Rohit Sharma just concentrating on the team he wants in white-ball cricket and Virat Kohli focusing on Test cricket. It takes a lot of pressure off you.
