 Jay Shah confirms Rohit Sharma to be be captain for T20 World Cup 2024

Indian Cricket Board secretary Jay Shah has confirmed that for the T20I World Cup India will be led by Rohit Sharma and also claimed that India will win the World Cup in Barbados under his captaincy. On 14 February during the unveiling of Niranjan Shah Stadium Jay Shah confirmed this news.

“We may have lost the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup. But we won hearts thereby winning 10 matches in a row. I am confident that India will lift the 2024 T20 World Cup under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy at Barbados,” Jay Shah said.

In the last T20I World Cup India lost to England in Semi-final matches, since then Rohit Sharma has played only three T20I matches for the India team. He captained India in the three T20I matches against Afghanistan. Rohit went scoreless in the first two T20I matches. In the last T20I match against Afghanistan in Bengaluru he smashed a century marking his 5th hundred in the shortest format of the game. While Hardik Pandya is named as vice-captain for the T20I World Cup. Meanwhile, for the IPL 2024, Hardik Pandya replaced Rohit Sharma in the captaincy role of the Mumbai Indians.

As per rumours, Hardik Pandya was the contender for the captaincy role for the T20I World Cup as he has captained India in 11 matches till now. While Suryakumar Yadav has also captained India in 8 matches so far.

After getting injured in the ODI World Cup in the match against Bangladesh in Pune, Hardik Pandya hasn’t played a single match for India.

The T20 World Cup will start on 1st June in the West Indies and The USA

In the ODI World Cup 2023, Rohit Sharma captained India from the front as they made it into the final as they won all the matches. Rohit Sharma gave a good start taking full advantage of powerplay overs. Rohit Sharma was the second-highest run-scorer in the tournament as he scored 597 runs. However, India finished as runner-up as they lost to Australia in the final match.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are eager to play in the 2024 T20 World Cup and have made themselves available for the selection. They both played the T20I series against Afghanistan. The duo will be seen in action in the IPL.

The 2024 T20I World Cup will start from 1st June and India will face Ireland in their first match of the World Cup. They will face Pakistan on 5th June in New York.
