‘Joy Mohun Bagan’ – Fans react as Mohun Bagan defeat East Bengal 1-0 in Durand Cup 2023 final

Mohun Bagan Super Giant (MBSG) locked horns with SC East Bengal (SCEB) in the final of the  2023 edition of the Durand Cup. The match was played at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on Sunday, September 3. Mohun Bagan won the final by a score line of 1-0 and the goal scorer for the side was Dimitri Petratos. With this victory, MBSG clinched their 17th Durand Cup title.

Both the Kolkata sides entered the final after defeating the tough opponents in the semi-finals of the contest. On one side, MBSG defeated FC Goa 2-1 whereas SCEB defeated Northeast United 5-3 on penalties. Earlier, the two sides faced each other in the group stage where East Bengal emerged victorious and defeated MBSG in the match by a scoreline of 1-0.

Mohun Bagan Super Giant received a major blow in the second half

The final of the Durand Cup was the 391st meeting between the two teams. The Mohun Bagan side last clinched the title back in 2000. They went on to play the finals in 2004, 2009, and 2019 but were not able to cross the line. Before this final, both the teams were tied with a total of 16 Durand Cup titles. The first half of the final ended in a draw.

In the second half, Mohun Bagan got into trouble when their player, Anirudh Thapa received his second yellow of the night for a high boot in the 62nd minute. The East Bengal side was not able to capitalize on a one-man advantage in the match. They had a total of six shots on target but none of them crossed the line. On the other hand, the Super Giants were able to hit only one shot on target, and that converted into a goal.

The 2023 edition of the Durand Cup started on August 3, 2023. Atotal of 24 teams participated in this competition who were divided into six groups. This was the tournament’s 132nd edition. Petratos was awarded the Player of the Match for his match winning goal.
