Mitchell Santner led New Zealand hammered away by Australia in the 2nd T20 at Auckland. Australia won by a thumping margin of 72 runs. Australia’s bowling made it seem like this match was happening at the WACA. That surface produced a lot of bounce and Aussie bowlers capitalised it very beautifully.  Josh Hazlewood was the absolute best, bowling 17 dot balls in his four-over spell, and that included a maiden. NZ were trapped in this chase.

Australia had a great start, after batting first Australia was absolutely ruthless. They scored over 72 runs in their powerplay. Left-arm fast bowler Trend Boult has been punished by Travis Head. he scored 45 runs off 22 balls. At one time Australia was 104/2 in just 8.4 overs. New Zealand comes back very strongly. Australia loses their next 5 wickets in just 34 runs. At one point Australia was 138/7. But they ended their innings on 174. Adam Milne, Ben Sears and skipper Michell Santner took 2 wickets and fast bowler Lockie Ferguson took 4 wickets in his spell and gave only 12 runs.

New Zealand looked tacky in their chase. They were 29/4 in 7th over. Glenn Philips tried to fight back but he was out by Adam Zampa. Zampa took 4 wickets in his spell. It was a complete team performance by the Aussies. New Zealand all out at 102 in just 17 overs. Australia led the series by 2-0.

Michell Marsh said it’s a ‘collective’ performance by the Aussies, he praised his fast bowlers

“Great win for Australia. Our backs were against the wall. I thought we were 50 short. But the way our bowlers came out and performed was outstanding. A collective effort. It’s one of those grounds where you get lured into the short boundaries. The wicket was good. Had a steep bounce which we should be used to.

One of our mantras as a batting unit is to keep taking the game on and trusting our skills. I was proud of the fact we did that. I think all of our teams have been backed into corners in the last 12 months and we’ve found a way to get out of them. Tonight was another great example of that.” Marsh said in the post-match presentation. Australia and New Zealand will play third t20 on February 25 in Auckland.
