South African women opening batter Laura Wolvaardt looked confused during the press conference after the match against Bangladesh in the ongoing Women’s 20-20 World Cup in South Africa. The hosts registered a convincing victory against Bangladesh on Tuesday in their last league match to secure a final spot in the semi-finals. Wolvaardt was awarded player of the match for her unbeaten knock of 66 runs chasing 114 against Bangladesh.

After the match, she became a victim of a funny incident at the official press conference that took place after the match. The 23-year-old was replying to the questions asked by the journalists, then the meeting was shifted to the Zoom call. The journalist was asking the question but Wolvaardt looked confused. She was also seen whispering “where is he” to a teammate sitting beside her.

The journalist then asked her, “can you hear me”, to which Wolvaardt replied, “yes, I just don’t know where you are”. She was then told that the journalist was asking the question via Zoom. The incident made everyone break into laughter present in the room including the South African batter.

Talking about the match in Cape Town, Bangladesh opted to bat first after winning the toss. But they weren’t able to take advantage and were restricted to 113 for the loss of 6 wickets. Skipper Nigar Sultana was the top scorer for Bangladesh. who took 34 balls to score 30 runs, hitting two boundaries. Sobhana Mostary scored 27 off 30 balls. For South Africa, Marizanne Kapp and Ayabonga Khaka scalped 2-2 wickets each. While Shabnim Ismail and Nonkululeko Mlaba shared a 1-1 wicket.

Chasing the total, the hosts didn’t find any hurdle as Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits put up an unbeaten opening partnership of 117 runs, winning the game by 10 wickets and 13 balls remaining. Wolvaardt took 56 deliveries for her knock scoring seven boundaries and a six. While Brits remained unbeaten on 50 runs from 51 balls hitting four boundaries.

South Africa will now face England in the second semi-final on February 24 in Cape Town. Meanwhile, India will take on Australia for the first semi-final on February 23 at the Newlands Cricket Ground.
