Yash Dhull, the promising young talent from Delhi, faced an unexpected setback as he was removed from the captaincy position following Delhi’s disheartening defeat to Puducherry in the opening match of the Ranji Trophy season. Delhi’s loss to a relatively inexperienced team intensified scrutiny of the troubled structure within the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA).

The decision to relieve Dhull of captaincy duties was deemed a knee-jerk reaction by the selectors. Himmat Singh was named the new captain, while Ayush Badoni retained the position of vice-captain. Delhi head coach Devang Gandhi expressed his belief in Dhull’s potential as the future of both Delhi and Indian cricket. Gandhi emphasised the importance of allowing Dhull to refocus on his batting, considering him a serious prospect for the future.

The woes in Delhi cricket have been attributed to a lack of commitment from senior players towards the state team. The departure of Nitish Rana and Dhruv Shorey to play for other states highlighted this issue. The absence of a player willing to take charge and bat at No. 3 further compounded the team’s challenges.

Allegation of favouritism emerges in DDCA

Confusion within the selection committee, comprising Robin Singh, Soumick Chatterjee, and Mayank Sidana, added to the team’s troubles. The committee’s failure to name consistent 15-man squads and the influence of external factors on player selection created an atmosphere of uncertainty. The inclusion of Kshitiz Sharma, who had left Delhi two seasons ago and lacked recent performance, raised eyebrows. The team’s management’s decision to play with makeshift openers to accommodate Sharma added to the perplexity.

Allegations of favouritism and confusion emerged, with Ayush Badoni attending a selection meeting as a captain but ultimately being appointed as vice-captain. The selection committee’s indecision extended to asking Himmat Singh to pick 16 players before the team announcement for the first match. Reports also suggested discomfort among selectors due to Ishant Sharma’s involvement and coordination with Coach Gandhi.

The chaotic state of team selection and alleged interference from multiple officials have led to calls for stability in the process. It is essential for players to feel secure and take responsibility, paving the way for a more organised and focused approach in Delhi cricket.
