Kolkata set to announce interim skipper for Indian T20 League, Sunil Narine and Shardul Thakur in contention – Reports
Kolkata’s regular skipper Shreyas Iyer is ruled out for half of the upcoming Indian T20 League 2023 tournament. He complained of back pain during the fourth BGT game. Iyer didn’t come out to bat and was subsequently ruled out of the ODI series. Notably, his injury re-aggravated as it first happened to him ahead of the ODI series against New Zealand in January this year.
Meanwhile, with the Mumbaikar ruled out, the team needs to appoint a captain. One of the first contenders is Sunil Narine, who is part of the team since 2012. Not to forget, he has played for teams such as Trinbago Knight Riders and Abu Dhabi Knight Riders. On the other hand, Shardul Thakur is also a contender, who was signed via window trading last November.
With only a few days left in the tournament, the team has in tatters regarding the captaincy issues. Meanwhile, a franchise official has said that in the next couple of days, the leader of the pack will be announced.
“Within a day or two, Kolkata are set to make the announcement of their new captain in a grand function, with their owner, Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan and an overseas pop star set to light up the occasion,” a source told TOI.
