Ollie Robinson may rethink his statement, “There are three No.11s in Australia”. The pacer’s day three sledge must have been echoing around his thoughts with each successive run as the tourists got closer to their mark of 281 at Edgbaston on Tuesday. It wasn’t far from the minds of Australia’s supporters when Cummins guided a Robinson delivery to the third man to record an unexpected two-wicket win to kick off the Ashes. He has emerged as England’s primary antagonist in this series.

After dismissing Usman Khawaja for 141 on day three, his expletive-laden outburst raised eyebrows, and the bowler had to be dragged away from Australia’s opening again on day five. He made several statements during the day three post-match news conference that drew the criticism of former players, whom he essentially accused of bullying in the past.

Australia have got three No.11s in their team: Ollie Robinson

Robinson bashed Australia for being “too defensive,” said England had gotten into their heads, and, most importantly, claimed the visitors possessed “three No.11s.” Cummins was the only player in Australia’s bottom order who Robinson did not classify as a No.11.

However, Scott Boland was included in Robinson’s comment, and the Victoria speedster scored 20 runs as a tailender at the conclusion of day four, and the start of day five proved important. So did Nathan Lyon, who scored an undefeated 16 in the match-winning 55-run stand with Cummins.

Cummins said after Australia’s two-wicket win on Tuesday, “I didn’t hear that one.” “But batting is something we all practise. Nathan (Lyon) … puts a lot of time into his batting. “We all had pretty strong plans. Even the adjustment from the first innings, we got a couple of bumpers. We adjusted and went out with a really clear plan.”

“Lyon has a Test average of 12.73 and is by no means a bunny. He played one of the shots of the final day when he lofted a Stuart Broad delivery over mid-on late in the chase, and creamed another ball from Broad past Robinson at mid-off for four. The No.10 also survived eight balls off Robinson as England worked to keep Lyon on strike in the belief bowling at him was their best path to victory. He was really good.”
