This summer, Chelsea may have to compete with Manchester United to land Joao Felix on a long-term contract. The Portuguese forward, who enjoyed his loan at Stamford Bridge despite the Blues’ terrible form, appears ready to try to force his way out of Atletico Madrid before the start of the following season.

Since joining Chelsea in January, Felix has played in 12 matches and registered just two goals, but his overall performances have been strong. The 23-year-old will return to Atletico in the summer, but it’s anticipated that he’ll try to force a move elsewhere, with Chelsea seeking to reach an agreement on a long-term contract with the Spanish team.

When Cristiano Ronaldo left the team before the World Cup, United are in need of a replacement centre forward, and his countryman from Portugal might be the one. At Old Trafford, Erik ten Hag is dealing with many underwhelming strikers, including Anthony Martial, Wout Weghorst, Jadon Sancho, and Antony.

‘I really like what he’s [Joao Felix] done so far’ – Gabby Agbonlahor

Following an impressive loan stint in the second half of the 2022–23 season, Felix may prioritise a move to Stamford Bridge. But, there are a few factors to consider before moving to West London. A new permanent manager has not yet been named, so Frank Lampard is serving as interim manager until the completion of the current campaign.

A new manager may not even want Felix, which would open the door for other teams to sign the 23-year-old. The anticipated arrival of Christopher Nkunku from RB Leipzig may also prevent Chelsea from signing the Portuguese international.

According to football.london, Nkunku has signed a pre-contract deal with the Blues after passing his pre-move medical exams. Given Felix’s contract predicament with Atleti, Todd Boehly may be able to avoid paying a significant sum for him. Former Aston Villa forward Gabby Agbonlahor has advised Ten Hag to sign Felix before Chelsea this summer and let go of four underwhelming players. Agbonlahor explained to Football Insider:

“I really like what he’s [Felix] done so far. I’ve seen a different side to him at Chelsea. At Atletico, he was playing too deep and wasn’t suited to how they play. At Chelsea, you see him getting on the ball, twisting past players – and he’s got a bit of pace as well. I really like him, but he’s got to be more clinical. I don’t see any reason why Manchester United can’t get him. They need options if they’re in the Champions League next season. Martial isn’t good enough, nor is Weghorst – scrap them. Antony and Sancho haven’t been great, so you’re talking about Rashford as their only threat. They need help, or it could be an embarrassing time in the Champions League for them. Felix, for me, would be a good signing for them.”
