 ‘Men’s team thodi sasti hain’ – Twitter gives mixed reactions as five franchises for Women’s Indian T20 League 2023 finalized

Five franchise owners from the Men’s Indian T20 League have acquired teams of the Women’s Indian T20 League. 16 parties participated in the auction for the teams’ auction. However, the owners of Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi, Ahmedabad, and Lucknow managed to win the bids and acquire the team ahead of the inaugural season of the Women’s League. Notably, the auction has broken the record of the 2008 Men’s auction.

In total, the bids for the five teams went for INR 4669.99 crore, more than the price of the eight teams in 2008. The Ahmedabad team was sold for the highest price: INR 1289 crore (USD 158 million approx), followed by Mumbai (INR 912.99 crore/USD 111 million approx), Bengaluru (INR 901 crore/USD 110 million approx), Delhi (INR 810 crore/USD 99.35 million approx) and Lucknow (INR 757 crore/USD 92.85 million approx).

It is a historic day in the Women’s Indian T20 League: Jay Shah

After the five teams were finalized, Indian Cricket Board secretary Jay Shah took to Twitter and said that it is historic in the Women’s Indian T20 League. He mentioned that the bidding for the teams broke the 2008 record. The ACC president added that this will be a beginning of a revolution in women’s cricket.

“Today is a historic day in cricket as the bidding for teams of inaugural #WTL broke the records of the inaugural Men’s ITL in 2008! Congratulations to the winners as we garnered Rs.4669.99 Cr in total bid. This marks the beginning of a revolution in women’s cricket and paves the way for a transformative journey ahead not only for our women cricketers but for the entire sports fraternity.

“The #WTL would bring necessary reforms in women’s cricket and would ensure an all-encompassing ecosystem that benefits each and every stakeholder. The Indian Cricket Board has named the league – Women’s T20 League (WTL). Let the journey begin….,” Jay Shah wrote on Twitter.
