South Africa ended their ODI World Cup 2023 group phase with a resounding five-wicket win over Afghanistan. The match was played on Friday at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad as the South Africans finished second in the points table.

Coming into the game, Afghanistan needed a huge win with an improbable margin in a bid to make it to the final four stages. This was after their heartbreaking loss to Australia in Mumbai on Tuesday.

The South Africans meanwhile were already in the semi-finals of the ODI World Cup 2023 tournament. Temba Bavuma-led side will take on Australia in the second semi-finals on Thursday at the Eden Garden Ground in Kolkata.

South Africa overcame Afghanistan’s challenge by five wickets –

The South Africans had to chase down 245 runs to win their 7th game of the ODI World Cup 2023 tournament. Temba Bavuma was the first wicket to fall for 23 when he was caught by Rahmanullah Gurbaz off Mujeeb Ur Rahman.

Quinton De Kock continued his good form with the bat when he scored 41 runs before falling to Mohammed Nabi. Aiden Markram scored 26 before he was sent back to the hut by Rashid Khan.

The Afghanistan spin maestro Rashid Khan got his second wicket when he got the wicket of Heinrich Klaasen bowled for 10. David Miller scored 24 runs before he was caught and bowled by Mohammed Nabi.

Rassie Van Der Dussen was not out on 76 runs from 95 balls with 6 fours and a six in his knock. Andile Phelukwayo supported the 34-year-old batter as he was not out on 39 runs from 37 balls. The left-handed batter hit Naveen Ul Haq for two sixes and a boundary to seal the five-wicket win for the South African side.

Earlier in the day Azmatullah Omarzai scored career best 97 not out to help his side reach 244 runs from their 50 overs. Rahmat Shah and Noor Ahmed scored 26 runs apiece as the Afghanistan batting suffered against the relentless South African bowling.

Gerald Coetzee picked 4/44 which is his best figure in ODI cricket for South Africa. Australia and South Africa will renew their rivalry as they are set to play each other in Kolkata on Thursday. South Africa had beaten the Australian team in their previous game in Lucknow by a huge margin.
