Australia had brilliant planning for the final of the ODI World Cup 2023 against India. The Kangaroos assessed the conditions well and opted to bowl first on the big day, which was very unlike Australia, who usually bat first in big games to put runs on the board. As soon as Pat Cummins won the toss and elected to bowl first, there were discussions regarding the same. Many felt it was a wrong decision.
As it turned out, Cummins and Co were proven right. Australia aced the conditions brilliantly and got the better of India in a tactical game. After Australia emerged victorious, the decision of Pat was praised by everyone. It is now hailed as one of the best decisions by a captain. Ashwin revealed the things he asked Bailey about their stand to bowl first in the final. “Australia totally deceived me personally, I had a chat with George Bailey during the mid-innings, and I asked him why didn’t you guys bat first like you always do,” said Ashwin, who was curious to hear from Bailey. The Australian chief selector gave a brilliant reason behind Australia bowling first in the match.
After playing years of cricket in the IPL, Australia got to know about the conditions concerning the different types of soils used. “He answered back, we have played IPL & Bilateral series here a lot – red soil disintegrates but not black soil & it gets better under lights – no impact on the dew on red soil but black soil has a good turn in the afternoon & then it will be concrete in night – this is our experience,” revealed Ashwin.
