Virat Kohli stepped down as India’s Test captain after his team got beaten by South Africa in the Test series by a margin of 2-0. Before stepping down Virat won 40 out of 69 Tests as captain, which makes him the most successful Test captain of India.

The records of Virat as a test captain are very difficult to match or beat. But Wasim Jaffer, the former Indian opener, has a different opinion. He has made a bold remark that Rohit Sharma could become an even better Test captain than Virat Kohli.

In Jaffer’s opinion, Rohit is the right man to step into the shoes of Kohli. Rohit is known to be a calm and composed leader and a shrewd strategist. His reign as the Test captain has begun well for India with a 2-0 series victory over Sri Lanka.

“Rohit Sharma can become a better test Captain than Virat Kohli. Don’t know how many Tests he will captain, but tactically I feel he is one of the best captains and we are seeing the results of how they have whitewashed each series. It feels like the captaincy has come in the hands of the right captain,” Jaffer told ESPNcricinfo.

Don’t think WTC Final qualification will be a problem if India plays consistently: Wasim Jaffer

Jaffer feels that India could easily qualify for the World Test Championship final even if they are placed fourth in the points table at present.

“We aren’t going to play a lot of Tests. There is one Test against England and then in Bangladesh so there are lots of breaks. However, if all players are fit and if we play consistently as Australia is going to come later, then I don’t think it should be a problem,” Jaffer said.

Notably, India is leading against England in a Test series by 2-1, which was interrupted last year because of the COVID-19 cases in the Indian dressing room. The series till that stage was played under the captaincy of Kohli, but Rohit will be leading India in the one test left in the series. The match is to take place in July this year, and it will be interesting to see how Rohit leads the team in the match.
