In the 8th match of the ODI World Cup 2023, Pakistan beat Sri Lanka by six wickets. In the high-scoring encounter, Mohammad Rizwan and Abdullah Shafique changed the game for Pakistan. They scored amazing centuries to outplay Sri Lankan bowlers.

Earlier, in the game, Sri Lanka skipper Dhasun Shanaka won the toss and opted to bat first. His decision went well with the team, as opener Pathum Nisannka, along with Kusal Mendis, added 102 runs for the second wicket after losing Kusal Perera for a duck. Nisannka, in his inning, scored 51 runs off 61 balls with the help of seven fours and a six.

After his departure, Mendis and Sadeera Samrawickrama added 111 runs for the third wicket. Mendis, in his inning, scored 122 runs off 77 balls with the help of fourteen fours and six sixes. On the other hand, Samrawickrama scored 108 runs off 89 balls with the help of eleven fours and two sixes. In the end, Pakistan bowlers made a comeback and restricted Sri Lanka to a massive total of 344/9 in 50 overs. Hasan Ali was the best bowler for Pakistan, as he took four wickets.

Rizwan and Shafique clinched the game for Pakistan

Chasing a massive total, Pakistan got the worst possible start. They lost two wickets, including from skipper Babar Azam and opener Imam-Ul-Haq. However, after their departure, opener Abdullah Shafique and wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan added 176 runs for the third wicket. Shafique, in his innings, hammered his maiden ODI ton. He scored 113 runs off 103 balls with the help of 10 fours and three sixes.

After his departure, Rizwan, along with Saud Shakeel, added 95 runs for the fourth wicket. Shakeel, in his innings, scored 31 runs off 30 balls with the help of two boundaries. In the end, Rizwan and Iftikhar Ahmed finished the game for Pakistan. Rizwan in his innings scored unbeaten runs off 134 runs off 121 balls with the help of nine fours and four sixes. It’s worth noting that Rizwan is the first Pakistani batter to score a century in ODIs while batting at number 4 in the last four years.
