‘Sachin had to wait for six World Cups’ – Ravichandran Ashwin gives no-nonsense reply on ‘Virat-Rohit not winning a World Cup as captain’
Winning a World Cup has always been an art. Talking about ODI World Cups, only Clive Lloyd (West Indie) and Ricky Ponting (Australia) have been able to defend the title as captain. On the other hand, no captain has been able to defend the title. Talking about India, they haven’t won a World Championship since 2013. Since then, they have missed out on a lot of global Championships.
Under MS Dhoni, the Men In Blue won three championships (2007 20-20 World Cup, 2011 ODI World Cup, and 2013 Champions Trophy). After he left the captaincy in January 2017, India played a Champions Trophy that year a few World Cups in the next few years. The team has played under the likes of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. However, the team hasn’t been able to win any of the titles.
Sachin Tendulkar had to wait for six World Cups to win one: Ravichandran Ashwin
Meanwhile, India off-spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin has said explained why winning a World Cup is not easy. He cited Sachin Tendulkar’s example as the Master Blaster played six World Cups but could only win one.
“It’s easy to say you haven’t won this and so on. After the 1983 World Cup, the great Sachin Tendulkar played the 1992, 1996, 1999, 2003, and 2007 World Cups. He finally won the World Cup in 2011. He had to wait for 6 World Cups to finally win one,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.
“Just because another stalwart MS Dhoni came and won a World Cup as soon as he took charge, doesn’t mean it’ll happen to everyone, right?”
“These players (Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli), didn’t play in 2007. Rohit Sharma missed out on the 2011 World Cup. Only Kohli played in 2011, 2015, 2019 and now he will play his fourth World Cup in 2023. ‘He hasn’t won an ICC tournament’ they say. He has won it in 2011, he has won the 2013 Champions Trophy. Rohit Sharma has also won the 2013 Champions Trophy. So, we can give them space guys. They are playing bilaterals, IPL, and so many other matches. When it comes to ICC tournaments, you need those crucial moments to go your way,” he said.
