The Bangladesh cricket team has suffered a huge blow as their captain Shakib Al Hasan is set to undergo surgery on his left eye. Notably, he has reported the issue to the Bangladesh Cricket Board for quite some time now. The Bangladesh Cricket Board’s senior physician Dr Debashis Chowdhury recently presented a report after multiple eye assessments which confirmed the retainer rupture and issues. 

Ever since the poor performance in the ODI World Cup 2023, Bangladesh has been struggling to perform in international cricket as their captain Shakib has been consistently injured with back-to-back injuries. After the successful completion of the surgery, Shakib will be eyeing a spot in the T20 World Cup 2024 squad, after missing a lot of cricket action shortly. 

Dr Debashis Chowdhury on Shakib Al Hasan’s retina condition 

“Shakib has been complaining of subtle issues with his left eye. After consulting Ophthalmologists in Bangladesh and abroad and after multiple eye assessments, it was confirmed that he is suffering from Extrafoveal Central Serous Chorioretinopathy (CSR) of the left eye. It has been decided that a conservative approach will be adopted for managing t… issue for now,” Senior Physician Dr Debashis Chowdhury of the Bangladesh Cricket Board said in an official statement by the board.

“Extrafoveal Central Serous Chorioretinopathy is a condition that affects the retina, leading to visual disturbances. The medical team overseeing Shakib’s case is optimistic about managing the condition effectively with a conservative approach,” He further added.

Previously, as reported by the Dhaka Tribune, Towards the beginning of the year 2024, Hasan had contested for the Magura-1 constituency from the Awami League (AL) party in Bangladesh and bagged a huge win in the elections by 185,388 votes. While his competing rival Kazi Rezaul Hossain, had bagged 45,993 votes in the general elections. As per the reports, The total number of centres in the Magura-1 constituency is 152.
