In this first game of the five-match ODI series, India was asked to bat first. They plundered 414/7, thanks to Virender Sehwag (146), Sachin Tendulkar (69), MS Dhoni (72), and Ravindra Jadeja (30*). However, the then MS Dhoni-led side almost faced retribution from the Lanka Lions. In reply, the visitors fell short by only three runs, despite the best efforts of Upul Tharanga (67), Tillakaratne Dilshan (160), and Kumar Sangakkara (90).
